According to the latest reports, ‘Avatar’ has reclaimed its title of the highest-grossing box office hit. The crown has been snatched from 2019’s blockbuster release, ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
After its release in 2010, ‘Avatar’ became the highest-selling global film ever. It took the title away from Cameron’s ‘Titanic.’ Almost a decade later, the Avengers culmination film, ‘Endgame’ became the highest-selling film internationally. It won the title after its net gross reached a record peak of $2.797 billion. The movie became a box office sensation and continues to remain a Marvel genius to date. However, it recently lost its title to ‘Avatar’ after it reached a net gross of $2.802 billion.
‘Avatar’ Rereleases In Chinese Markets
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore media analyst, mentioned in a statement that these two ‘titans’ have been in a constant duel for years. As ‘Avatar’ reclaims its crown, the significance of a big-screen experience both in terms of its revenue-generating power and its cultural impact is brought under scrutiny.
After the dethroning, the Russo brothers, the ‘Endgame’ directors congratulated Cameron on social media for his repeated success. They posted, “Passing the gauntlet back to you.”
A lot of the dethroning has to do with the Chinese markets that rereleased the film as a part of its New Year celebrations. The film was already in the stock list of preapproved movies at the Film Bureau in China. Tickets for the sci-fi movie were rolled out recently to boost attendance in the film festivals that did not release any new films this year.
Jon Landau, the producer, thanked the Chinese audience for their support. He further mentioned in the statement that he is looking forward to continuing the legacy of this epic story through his next ‘Avatar’ films.
