Kevin McCarthy, the newly elected House Speaker, has reiterated that he would desist from urging New York Republican Representative George Santos from resigning from Congress. In a statement, Kevin McCarthy said that America was a truly compassionate nation, and he felt that there is a way back for Santos.
Earlier Nassau County GOP politicians, where George Santos’s congressional area is located, attacked the Representative for falsifying his records and urged him to bow out.
Santos has confessed to fabricating crucial parts of his qualifications as he ran for office. He is now under multiple investigations but has refused to resign from Congress.
But Kevin McCarthy said that he wouldn’t go so far as to urge the embattled GOP to step down from Congress. His stand came within hours of the legislators from New York vehemently pushing for him to resign.
Kevin Mccarthy Has Argued That It Is For The Voters To Decide On Santos’ Fate
Kevin McCarthy argued that it was for the voters to decide on Santos’ fate. He was speaking to reporters who asked him if he would readily accept the beleaguered Representative’s resignation if he decides to step down.
The House Speaker said that the decision was for Santos to make. Kevin McCarthy stressed that the voters of his constituency had elected him for a term. If the issue crops up, it is for the Ethics Committee to decide, and he will go through that.
Kevin McCarthy has also said that George Santos, who said he made up large parts of his resume when he ran for office, is still able to serve on House Committees, even though he did not meet the standards.
However, he said that the newly elected Representative would not get to serve on the more important House Panels. He said this because the Republican Party did not like him. Santos has defiantly declared that he would not step down from Congress.
