Garoppolo Will Serve As A Backup To Trey Lance
The restructured contract further of Jimmy Garoppolo includes clauses for no-tag and no-trades. This ensures Jimmy’s role as a Trey Lance backup for this season. Moreover, this also opens up the possibility for him to try his hands at the free agency in 2023 without any restrictions.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the 49ers and Garoppolo have also talked about including ways of doing away with the clause for no-trade should something develop that will give the 49ers proper compensation. However, Garoppolo wanted to help out the squad. He also expressed his desire to play matches during this season alongside his teammates.
Depending on the structure, the salary cap amount in 2022 for Jimmy can result in it somewhere around $8Mn and $9Mn. Previously, it was expected to cost around $26.9Mn
The possibility of Jimmy and the Niners sticking together increased more and more as a training camp and an offseason passed without the Niners being able to locate proper trade partners for the player. In March, Garoppolo had to undergo surgery for his right shoulder which meant trading the player was almost impossible. When he finally managed to return to throwing form near the end of June, the teams that needed a QB had already looked towards other options.
