Mike Johnson, the new House Speaker, has a fiery history that involves direct language opposing homosexuality. This is from the time when Johnson was an attorney representing a legal group that was socially conservative during the middle of the 2000s. In local editorials during that time, Johnson was quoted as describing homosexuality as a “dangerous lifestyle” and “inherently unnatural”. He further stated that it would result in pedophilia being legalized and the eventual destruction of the democratic system.
Has Mike Johnson’s Stance Changed?
In a different editorial, Mike Johnson explained that while sex, creed, and race are “what you are”, cross-dressing and homosexuality become “things you do”. He further stated that while the US is a free country, special protections are not given to the bizarre choices of every person.
This was from the time when Johnson was acting as a spokesman and attorney for the Alliance Defense Fund. Today, it goes by the name of Alliance Defending Freedom. During that time, he had also maintained opposition to the Supreme Court’s Lawrence vs Texas ruling. The ruling eventually overturned laws of the state that saw homosexual activity involving consenting adults as criminal.
On October 26th, Mike Johnson was asked about his editorials while giving an interview to Sean Hannity of Fox News. He claimed that he no longer even remembers some of the pieces. He explained that he was a lawyer focusing on defending religious liberty and he was asked to defend state amendments regarding marriage. Mike Johnson, a self-proclaimed Christian who believes in the Bible, further stated that he truly loves anyone irrespective of their choices in lifestyle. He also added that he has the utmost respect for the law. Today, he becomes the House speaker when most Americans strongly support gay rights.
