The Biden administration has revealed that the US will officially end the contentious policy, Title 42, applied by Trump to restrict the entry of immigrants from the southern border. The policy first came into force at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and stayed in place.

The announcement was made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Title 42 could be removed on May 23. It will give the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) sufficient time to organize for the expected increase in people wanting to cross the border. That includes getting more vaccine doses plus various other processes to handle the expected surge in the influx of immigrants. This was stated in the termination notice put up by the CDC and written by Rochelle Walensky, its director.

The department revealed that they expected to apprehend around 18,000 immigrants every day at the southern border with Mexico, once Title 42 was lifted. The order further stated that the DHS has said they have taken vital measures to implement the processes as border operations are expected to resume fully.

CDC Has Stated That Title 42 Was Temporary And The Notice Had Outlived Its Purpose

The notice states Title 42 was purportedly implemented to avert diseases from entering the US for a brief period and the CDC consulted DHS on its termination.

Walensky wrote that after assessing the present epidemiological status and the administration’s continuing efforts, there appears to be no reason for the order and other previous related orders to continue.

Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of DHS said that Title 42 was related to public health and not immigration that was implemented during the pandemic by the CDC to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

He added that immigrants will be dealt with under Title 8, the standard practice for removal proceedings. He stressed that people who cannot justify a legal ground to enter the US would be turned back.

State Department and DHS officials assured citizens that they have plans ready to tackle the expected rush of migrants.
