Troy Meritt, Cam Davis & Joaquin Niemann went neck to neck at the Golf Club of Detroit on Sunday at the Traveler’s Championship, Rocket Mortgage Classic.
The trio of Troy Meritt along with Cam Davis, Joaquin Niemann almost replicated the most intriguing playoffs in the history of the PGA tour when they took the playoff for the week as deep as five holes.
Troy Meritt, Cam Davis Go Neck To Neck
After a wonderful display and a staggering consistency of not making a bogey for 72 consecutive holes of the tournament, Joaquin Niemann, much against the run of play got excluded. Niemann made a first hole bogey, par-4 18th, while Davis and Meritt both scored par. He had a sad and anti-climatic ending after a splendid performance. Troy Meritt and Davis continued till par-3 15th hole where Davis edged past Troy Meritt.
Davis, who missed his birdie, thought it to be over for him but Meritt’s failure to get down from the rough ended the epic playoff finally. Davis was very much fortunate to have qualified for the playoff holing out to a bunker at the greenside while making an eagle at hole number 71. Everyone was convinced about the playoff heading towards another eight holes as both Troy Meritt and Cam Davis had birdied at no 14.
2020 seemed to be a lucky year for Davis as he recorded four top-ten finishes. All of them came since the Sony Open. Meritt emphasizes doing the job that he is supposed to do, i.e. keep hitting putts. He was awesome and flawless the whole week until the last that earned Troy Meritt the 2nd position.
Bubba Watson made significant progress this week, as he was seen to enjoy his play. However, Bryson DeChambeau was reluctant to talk to the media as he missed the cut on Friday.
